Week of 2 March 2026: a 6.33% Wednesday rally ends back near where the week started
After four straight down weeks, what does a mid-week rally that fully gave back its gains say about whether the decline is pausing or turning?
BTC rose 0.30% to 65,971.20 and ETH fell 0.13% to 1,937.10, both near flat. Both peaked Wednesday 4 March (BTC 74,050, ETH 2,199.00) and closed in the lower third of their weekly ranges. Both assets are now 47.65% and 60.75% below their 52-week highs.
What the data shows. The week opened near its low and rallied hard mid-week. BTC's low of 65,259.21 came early, at 14:00 UTC on Monday 2 March, and its high of 74,050 arrived at 19:00 UTC on Wednesday 4 March, the same hour ETH set its high of 2,199.00. Wednesday was the best day for both (BTC +6.33%, ETH +7.29%). The gains did not hold: Friday 6 March was the worst day (BTC -3.92%, ETH -4.54%), and both closed in the lower third of their weekly ranges (BTC at 8.1% of range, ETH at 7.4%). ETH's low came last, at 22:00 UTC on Sunday 8 March. Realised volatility, the size of the swings that actually happened scaled to a yearly figure, reached 58.1% for BTC and 71.6% for ETH, against weekly returns of +0.30% and -0.13%. The two assets moved very closely hour by hour (correlation 0.93). BTC dollar volume was 1.15 times its prior twelve-week average; ETH's was 0.79 times.
What it does not show. The data cannot say whether the Wednesday rally was new buying or short covering, and nothing identifies who traded. A return at the 50th percentile for BTC and 49th for ETH across 420 weeks places this week squarely in the middle of history, but says nothing about the weeks ahead.
What a careful desk would check. The failed rally sits after four consecutive down weeks for both assets. A close at 65,971.20 barely above the open of 65,776.48, after a 13.47% range, is a week that spent itself going nowhere. A desk would test whether its position sizing survived the -3.92% Friday and whether stops set near Monday's low would have held.
Ether against Bitcoin. ETH lagged by 0.43 percentage points and the ETH/BTC ratio fell 0.43%. ETH also traded on thinner volume than its own recent average, while BTC's was above its. The gap is small, so this reads as near-unison rather than a rotation.
What would change this reading
- If a later week closes above the Wednesday high of 74,050, the rally reads as the start of a turn rather than a failed bounce.
- If BTC trades below its Monday low of 65,259.21, the mid-week rally reads as a pause inside the four-week decline.
- If ETH volume returns above its prior twelve-week average while its funding stays near -0.0032%, the lag against BTC is worth re-reading.
- If realised volatility stays near 58.1% for BTC with weekly returns near zero, ranges will stay wide without direction.
