Weekly brief · week of 30 June 2025

Week of 30 June 2025: both assets rise, but on 0.57x and 0.71x their usual volume

When Bitcoin and Ether both close the week higher on well-below-average volume and near-zero funding, how much of the move can be read as conviction rather than thin trading?

BTC rose 0.78% to 109,203.84 and ETH 2.81% to 2,570.35, both peaking in the same hour (13:00 UTC, Thursday 3 July) after bottoming in the same hour on Wednesday 2 July. Volume was 0.57x BTC's and 0.71x ETH's prior twelve-week average. BTC sits 2.31% below its 52-week high; ETH 37.1% below.

What the data shows. BTC gained 0.78%, opening at 108,356.93 and closing at 109,203.84 inside a 5.17% range. ETH gained 2.81%, from 2,500.09 to 2,570.35, inside an 11.06% range. Both bottomed in the same hour — 01:00 UTC on Wednesday 2 July, at 105,100.19 and 2,373.00 — and both peaked in the same hour, 13:00 UTC on Thursday 3 July, which also carried BTC's largest hourly move of the week (+1.00%). The best day for both was 2 July (BTC +3.00%, ETH +6.88%). Both closed in the upper third of their weekly ranges. Trading was thin: BTC dollar volume of 7.89 billion was 0.57 times its prior twelve-week average, ETH's 7.11 billion was 0.71 times. Realised volatility, the size of the swings that actually happened, was 24.6% annualised for BTC and 48.4% for ETH.

What it does not show. Low volume is consistent with a move made in a thin market, but it does not prove it, and the data cannot say who traded or on what side. Nothing here indicates whether the advance will hold. Funding rates were close to zero, so the data shows no measurable cost of carry on either side rather than any absence of leverage.

What a careful desk would check. The weekly return ranked at the 51st percentile for BTC and the 59th for ETH across 385 recorded weeks — near the middle of the historical distribution. The two assets sit in very different places relative to their own highs: BTC 2.31% below its 52-week high, ETH 37.1% below. A desk would treat ETH's larger range and roughly double BTC's realised volatility as separate sizing inputs, and would ask whether the small weekly gain survived in dollar terms at 0.57 times normal volume.

Ether against Bitcoin. The two moved closely (hourly correlation 0.83) but not identically: ETH outperformed by 2.03 percentage points and the ETH/BTC ratio rose 2.01%. That is a relative shift inside a shared direction, not a decoupling.

What would change this reading

  • If volume returns towards its prior twelve-week average while prices hold above this week's low of 105,100.19 for BTC and 2,373.00 for ETH, the advance gains a firmer base.
  • If the ETH/BTC ratio gives back the 2.01% it gained, the week's outperformance reads as temporary rather than as a change in leadership.
  • If BTC trades below 105,100.19 in a later week, this week's upper-third close reads as a pause inside a range rather than a turning point.
  • If funding for either asset turns clearly negative while prices hold, the near-zero reading this week was masking a shift in positioning.
