Week of 17 February 2025: Bitcoin ends flat while Ether gains 5.95%
When Bitcoin ends a week almost where it started but Ether rises nearly 6%, what does the divergence say about where the week's strength actually sat?
BTC went from 96,118.12 to 96,258.00 (+0.15%), ETH from 2,661.41 to 2,819.69 (+5.95%). The ETH/BTC ratio rose 5.79%. Both assets fell on Friday 21 February, and both traded on below-average volume (0.6x for BTC, 0.82x for ETH versus their prior twelve-week averages).
What the data shows. BTC dipped to its low of 93,388.09 at 19:00 UTC on Tuesday 18 February, then rallied to a high of 99,475 on Friday 21 February at 13:00 UTC before giving back the move; its worst day was Friday (-2.16%) and its largest hourly move (-1.30%) came at 19:00 UTC the same evening. BTC closed at 96,258.00, in the middle third of its 6.52% weekly range, 11.14% below its 52-week high. ETH followed a similar path but finished far stronger: its low of 2,605.44 came Tuesday at 17:00 UTC, and its high of 2,857.34 arrived in the final hour of the week, Sunday 23 February at 23:00 UTC. ETH's close sat in the upper third of its 9.67% range, 31.0% below its 52-week high. Hourly moves were close but not identical (correlation 0.77), and the ETH/BTC ratio gained 5.79%.
What it does not show. Price and volume cannot say why Ether gained while Bitcoin did not, who was buying, or whether the separation persists. Volume was below the prior twelve-week average for both assets (0.6x BTC, 0.82x ETH), so the divergence arrived on lighter trading, which can make moves easier to reverse. A weekly return at the 47th percentile for BTC and 69th for ETH out of 366 weeks describes rarity, not direction.
What a careful desk would check. BTC's realised volatility was 31.1% a year against ETH's 62.7%, roughly double, so equal capital in each carries different risk. ETH's Friday drop (-2.74% for the day, -2.98% in the hour starting 15:00 UTC) was followed by the week's best day on Saturday, +3.76%. A desk would test whether its sizing reflects that gap and whether the Sunday-high close for ETH was met with follow-through.
What would change this reading
- If BTC trades back above its weekly high of 99,475 in later weeks, this week's flat close reads as consolidation rather than a stalled rally.
- If the ETH/BTC ratio gives back the 5.79% gain, the week reads as a temporary rotation rather than a lasting shift.
- If volume returns towards the prior twelve-week averages while ETH holds above its close of 2,819.69, the divergence gains credibility.
- If ETH falls back below its Tuesday low of 2,605.44, the late-week high was likely a spike rather than a base.
