Week of 10 February 2025: quiet range, low volume, and ETH edging ahead of BTC

When both assets trade in a narrow range on weak volume, what can the small divergence between them tell a desk about positioning, and what remains unreadable?

BTC fell 0.36% to 96,118.12 while ETH rose 1.30% to 2,661.41, so ETH gained 1.66 percentage points on BTC. Both closed in the middle third of their weekly ranges, and dollar volume ran at roughly half the prior twelve-week average for each.

What the data shows. BTC traded a 5.04% range between 94,088.23 (Wednesday 13:00 UTC) and 98,826.00 (Friday 17:00 UTC), closing at 96,118.12, which sits at 42.8% of the range. ETH moved further in percentage terms, a 9.76% range between 2,546.92 and 2,795.45, both set on Wednesday, and closed at 46.1% of that range. The two assets still moved closely, with hourly correlation at 0.81, but ETH finished ahead, lifting the ETH/BTC ratio 1.67%. Trading was light: BTC dollar volume of 11.81 billion was 0.54 times its prior twelve-week average, ETH's 7.44 billion was 0.56 times. Realised volatility, the size of the swings that actually happened scaled to a yearly figure, was 34.8% for BTC and 57.4% for ETH. BTC remained 11.26% below its 52-week high, ETH 34.88% below its own.

What it does not show. The data records a quiet week, not a reason for one. The 1.66-point gap between the two weekly returns is small, and nothing here identifies who was buying ETH or whether the gap will persist. Prior four weeks were mixed for BTC (up twice, down twice) and mostly down for ETH (three of four), but a single week cannot confirm a turn in either.

What a careful desk would check. Funding rates near zero (BTC averaging 0.004% per eight hours, ETH 0.0044%) say leverage was not crowded in either direction. A desk would treat the low volume reading as the main caution: thin weeks can produce clean-looking ranges that do not hold. Stops sized on this week's 5.04% BTC range would be tested quickly by any return to normal volatility.

Ether against Bitcoin. ETH's gain against BTC came with both assets falling to their weekly lows on Wednesday, then ETH rallying harder the same day (+5.21%). ETH remains far deeper below its 52-week high than BTC, so one week of outperformance barely dents that gap.

What would change this reading

  • If ETH extends its gain against the BTC pair in later weeks, this week's 1.67% ratio move reads as the start of a shift rather than noise.
  • If volume returns towards its prior twelve-week average while prices hold this week's closes, the quiet range was genuine consolidation.
  • If BTC trades below its weekly low of 94,088.23, the middle-of-range close was a pause rather than support.
  • If realised volatility rises from 34.8% for BTC, position sizes set during this week become too large for the new conditions.
