Weekly brief · week of 5 December 2022

Week of 5 December 2022: Bitcoin and Ether end the week nearly flat on weak volume

When two cryptocurrencies barely move for a week after large declines, what does the calm actually tell us about liquidity, positioning, and the risk that stays hidden?

BTC fell 0.13% (17,106.65 to 17,085.05) and ETH 1.28% (1,279.4 to 1,263.01), both in the middle of their weekly ranges. Dollar volume ran at 0.64 times BTC's and 0.44 times ETH's prior twelve-week averages. Funding stayed near zero, averaging 0.0014% per eight hours for BTC.

What the data shows. BTC opened near its weekly high, set that high of 17,424.25 at 04:00 UTC on Monday 5 December, and then drifted to its low of 16,678.83 at 08:00 UTC on Wednesday 7 December. Thursday 8 December reversed the week: it was the best day for both assets (BTC +2.3%, ETH +3.98%) and produced the largest hourly move of the week (+1.66% for BTC, +2.61% for ETH) in the hour starting 18:00 UTC. The two moved closely (hourly correlation 0.91), and the ETH/BTC ratio fell 1.16%, so ETH gave up slightly more. Both assets closed in the middle third of their ranges, with BTC 67.05% and ETH 69.45% below their 52-week highs. Realised volatility, the size of the swings that actually happened scaled to a yearly figure, was 22.7% for BTC and 38.2% for ETH.

What it does not show. The data has no order-book or positioning figures, so it cannot say whether the quiet was caused by lack of interest or by balanced flows. Volume at 0.64 times the prior twelve-week average for BTC and 0.44 times for ETH shows less trading, not why. The flat close also follows four weeks that split evenly, two down and two up, so nothing here establishes a direction.

What a careful desk would check. A weekly range of 4.47% for BTC is narrow, but the Thursday hourly move of 1.66% still sat inside it. A desk would compare its exit prices with what an hour of trading could absorb, and note that thin volume can make a quiet week turn quickly without warning.

What would change this reading

  • If a later week trades below this week's low of 16,678.83 for BTC or 1,218.01 for ETH, the calm reads as a pause before further decline.
  • If volume returns towards its prior twelve-week average while price holds near the close of 17,085.05, the low activity this week looks like a temporary lull.
  • If ETH keeps falling faster than BTC, so the ETH/BTC ratio drops further from its -1.16% move, the relative weakness becomes a trend worth separating from the broad market.
