Week of 30 May 2022: Bitcoin ends +1.53% after four down weeks, closing near its low
After four consecutive falling weeks, does a small positive week mark stabilisation, and what do the intraweek path and the closing level suggest about the staying power of that gain?
BTC rose from 29,468.10 to 29,919.21 (+1.53%) while ETH fell from 1,813.64 to 1,806.23 (-0.41%). Both peaked on Tuesday 31 May and set weekly lows on Friday 3 June; closes sat at 20.4% (BTC) and 24.8% (ETH) of the weekly range. Dollar volume ran below the prior twelve-week average (0.90x for BTC, 0.88x for ETH).
What the data shows. BTC's four prior weeks returned -11.52%, -7.96%, -3.30% and -2.73%. This week's +1.53% stopped that run, but the path was uneven: BTC's best day was Monday 30 May (+7.69%) and its worst was Wednesday 1 June (-6.27%). The weekly high of 32,399.00 came on Tuesday 31 May at 16:00 UTC; the low of 29,282.36 came on Friday 3 June at 14:00 UTC, a 10.64% range. The close at 20.4% of that range means BTC finished near the bottom of its own week. ETH followed the same shape with more force: high 2,016.45 on Tuesday, low 1,737.00 on Friday, a 16.09% range, and a close at 24.8% of the range. Both assets remained far below their highs: BTC 56.41% below its 52-week high, ETH 62.73% below.
What it does not show. A weekly gain after four declines does not establish a turn. Volume was light (0.90x for BTC, 0.88x for ETH against the prior twelve-week average), and the data cannot say whether the Tuesday peak reflected new buying or short covering, nor who traded. Realised volatility of 48.3% (BTC) and 64.9% (ETH) measures the swings that happened, not the ones to come.
What a careful desk would check. Closing near the weekly low with a 51st-percentile return (BTC, 224 weeks) reads as a stalled attempt rather than confirmation. A desk would ask whether a later week can hold above the Friday lows of 29,282.36 and 1,737.00 before treating the +1.53% as anything durable.
Ether against Bitcoin. Hourly correlation was 0.89, but ETH lagged: the ETH/BTC ratio fell 1.91% and ETH's weekly return trailed BTC's by 1.94 percentage points.
What would change this reading
- If a later week closes below BTC's Friday low of 29,282.36, this week's positive return reads as a pause in the decline rather than a stabilisation.
- If BTC holds above 29,282.36 while volume rises above the 0.90x level of this week, the stabilisation reading strengthens.
- If the ETH/BTC ratio falls further after the -1.91% move, the weakness is becoming concentrated in ETH rather than shared across both.
- If realised volatility stays near 48.3% for BTC while price holds the weekly range, the swings are being absorbed rather than expanding.
Terms
- close location
- where the week's close falls between the weekly low and high, in percent; a low figure means the close sat near the bottom
- realised volatility
- how much the price actually swung over the period, expressed as an annual percentage
- percentile
- the share of past weeks with a lower value; the 51st percentile means just over half of the 224 recorded weeks were lower
