Concept · example: BTC, week of 5 September 2022

Close location

Where did the week finish inside its own trading range, and what does that position suggest about who won the week?

In plain words

Close location is the closing price's position within the week's high-to-low range, expressed as a percentage of that span. A value near the top means the week closed near its high; a value near the bottom means it closed near its low. It measures where the market finished, not how far it moved.

Why it matters

Two weeks can have the same range and return but finish in very different places. A close near the high suggests buying pressure held into the end of the period, while a close near the low suggests sellers had the last word. Traders use it to judge whether a move was sustained or faded.

In a real week: BTC, week of 5 September 2022

In the week of 5 September 2022, BTC ranged from a low of 18510.77 on 7 September 02:00 UTC (Wed) to a high of 21860.0 on 11 September 17:00 UTC (Sun). The close of 21826.87 sits at 99.0% of that range, essentially at the top, after the week opened at 20000.3 and gained 9.13%.

A common mistake

Reading a high close location as a prediction. It describes where the market ended within one period's range and says nothing about the next period.
