Week of 29 June 2026: Ether gains 13.59% and Bitcoin 6.84% on light volume

When both assets post strong weekly gains after three down weeks but trade on below-average volume, how much conviction does the price action actually carry?

BTC rose from 59,577.01 to 63,650.00 (+6.84%) and ETH from 1,571.96 to 1,785.65 (+13.59%). Both closed in the upper third of their week range with highs on Sunday. Dollar volume ran below the prior 12-week average for both, at 0.86x for BTC and 0.78x for ETH.

What the data shows. Both assets put in their lows before their highs: BTC at 57,800.19 at 01:00 UTC Wednesday 1 July, in the early hours of the UTC day, and ETH at 1,550.20 at 13:00 UTC Tuesday 30 June, in the middle of the UTC day. From there the week climbed, and both highs landed at the very end — BTC at 63,999.00 on Sunday 5 July at 23:00 UTC, ETH at 1,808.00 an hour earlier. Close location of 94.4% for BTC and 91.3% for ETH place the finish near the top of the week's range. The two moved closely but not identically (hourly correlation 0.83), and ETH outperformed by 6.75 percentage points, lifting the ETH/BTC ratio 6.32%. BTC's return ranked at the 80th percentile of the 437 weeks of history, ETH's at the 89th. Both came after three down weeks out of four.

What it does not show. Volume is the missing piece. BTC's 7.19 billion dollars was 0.86 times its prior twelve-week average and ETH's 3.41 billion was 0.78 times, so the gains arrived on lighter-than-usual activity. That does not tell us whether buying was thin because participants were absent or because sellers were scarce. The data also says nothing about who took the other side, and Sunday's late highs give no information about whether they held into the following week.

What a careful desk would check. A market still 49.49% (BTC) and 63.82% (ETH) below its 52-week high can rally hard without a trend change. Realised volatility, the size of actual swings scaled to a yearly figure, was 36.3% for BTC and 50.7% for ETH, and the largest hourly moves were modest at 1.64% and 2.88%. A desk would ask whether the light volume holds as prices approach the top of the range, and whether the 2.71% BTC dip on 30 June would repeat at a higher level.

Funding. BTC perpetual funding averaged 0.0072% per eight hours and never went negative (low 0.0019%, high 0.01%). ETH averaged 0.0051% with a low of -0.0002%. Positive funding means long positions were paying short ones, but the levels are small relative to a 6.84% and 13.59% move, so leverage did not look strained on this measure.

What would change this reading

  • If the following week trades above Sunday's highs of 63,999.00 for BTC and 1,808.00 for ETH on heavier volume, the light-volume caveat weakens.
  • If price fades back towards the week's opens of 59,577.01 and 1,571.96, the gain reads as a bounce inside a broader decline.
  • If funding rises well above 0.01% per eight hours while volume stays below the prior twelve-week average, leverage would be building without broad participation.
  • If ETH keeps outperforming BTC and the ratio rises further than 6.32%, the move is becoming a rotation rather than a common market rise.
