Week of 8 June 2026: Bitcoin and Ether rise after four down weeks on thin volume

After four straight losing weeks, how much weight should a gains week carry when trading volume stayed below its recent average?

BTC rose 3.81% to 65,746.45 and ETH 2.08% to 1,725.62, the first positive week after four down weeks for both. Dollar volume was 0.84 times the prior 12-week average for BTC and 0.66 for ETH. Both closed near their weekly highs, BTC 47.82% and ETH 65.03% below their 52-week highs.

What the data shows. Both assets fell to their weekly lows on Wednesday 10 June (BTC 60,755 at 09:00 UTC, ETH 1,603.44 at 21:00 UTC) and then rose for the rest of the week. The best day for both was Thursday 11 June (BTC +3.44%, ETH +3.2%). BTC's high of 65,800 came in the final hours on Sunday 14 June, alongside its largest hourly move of +2.04%. Closing in the upper part of the range (BTC 98.9%, ETH 94.8% of the week's span) with the low before the high is the shape of a week that recovered. The two moved closely hour by hour (correlation 0.91), but BTC gained more, so the ETH/BTC ratio fell 1.67%. This was BTC's 69th percentile weekly return over 434 weeks of history and ETH's 58th.

What it does not show. Volume does not identify who was buying. At 0.84 times its 12-week average for BTC and 0.66 for ETH, the rise came on thinner activity than the weeks before, which the data cannot explain. It also cannot say whether the four prior down weeks (BTC -5.78%, -0.51%, -4.4%, -14.04%) have ended.

What a careful desk would check. Realised volatility (the size of actual swings, annualised) was 39.6% for BTC and 54.3% for ETH. A rebound on falling volume is weaker evidence than one on rising volume, so a desk would ask whether later weeks confirm with higher turnover before treating this as a turn.

Funding. BTC perpetual funding averaged +0.0004% per eight hours, essentially flat, and ETH averaged -0.0026%, meaning short ETH positions paid long ones on average.

What would change this reading

  • If dollar volume rises above its prior 12-week average in a later week while price holds above this week's open of 63,332.01, the rebound gains support.
  • If a later week trades below the 10 June low of 60,755, this week reads as a pause inside the four-week decline.
  • If the ETH/BTC ratio keeps falling after a 1.67% drop, ETH's deeper distance from its 52-week high (-65.03% versus BTC's -47.82%) is widening rather than closing.
