Weekly brief · week of 20 April 2026

Week of 20 April 2026: Bitcoin gains 6.58% on below-average volume while Ether lags

When both assets rise for the week but trading activity falls below its recent average, what can price data say about the strength of the move, and what can it not settle?

BTC rose from 73,801.8 to 78,657.55 (+6.58%) and ETH from 2,263.28 to 2,369.44 (+4.69%). Both set their weekly lows at the open on Monday and their highs on Wednesday. Volume ran below the prior twelve-week average for both (0.62x BTC, 0.52x ETH), and average funding was slightly negative.

What the data shows. The week began at its low: BTC's low of 73,724.31 came at 00:00 UTC on Monday 20 April, and ETH's low of 2,259.67 in the same hour. Both reached their highs on Wednesday 22 April (BTC 79,472.82 at 16:00 UTC, ETH 2,423.75 at 14:00 UTC), so the low came before the high. Ranges were modest (7.8% for BTC, 7.26% for ETH) and the largest single hourly move was 1.71% for BTC and 2.07% for ETH, both in the hour starting 02:00 UTC on Wednesday. Both closed in the upper third of their weekly ranges (85.8% for BTC, 66.9% for ETH). BTC dollar volume was 7.33 billion and ETH 3.9 billion, both below their prior twelve-week averages.

What it does not show. Volume below average describes how much traded, not why less traded. Nothing here identifies who was buying or whether the move rested on fewer participants. The data carries no order-book or positioning figures, so the term "thin" cannot be verified from these candles.

What a careful desk would check. Realised volatility, the size of actual swings scaled to a yearly figure, was 31.4% for BTC and 37.3% for ETH. Both assets also remain well below their 52-week highs: BTC closed 37.58% below its 52-week high and ETH 51.99% below, so a 6.58% week does not erase the larger drawdown. The weekly return ranked at the 79th percentile of 427 weeks for BTC and the 66th for ETH: strong, not unusual. A desk would ask whether its position sizing assumes volume like this week's.

Ether against Bitcoin. Ether moved closely with Bitcoin (hourly correlation 0.86) but rose 1.89 percentage points less, and the ETH/BTC ratio fell 1.77%. Average funding was -0.0036% per eight hours for BTC and -0.0017% for ETH, with ETH ranging from -0.0121% to 0.01%.

What would change this reading

  • If a later week trades below this week's low of 73,724.31 for BTC, the rise reads as a pause rather than a change of direction.
  • If volume returns above the prior twelve-week average while price holds near 78,657.55, the move gains participation that this week lacked.
  • If ETH keeps losing ground against BTC beyond the 1.77% ratio drop recorded here, the relative weakness becomes a trend rather than one week.
  • If average funding stays negative while price rises, holders of long positions are being paid rather than paying, which reverses the usual crowding signal.

Terms

how much the price actually swung over the week, expressed as a yearly percentage
funding rate
a periodic payment between long and short holders of a perpetual futures contract; positive means longs pay shorts, negative means shorts pay longs
percentile
the share of past weeks with a lower value; the 79th percentile means 79% of past weeks were lower
