Week of 2 September 2024: BTC falls 4.24% and ETH 5.29% on lighter volume than usual
When a week ends lower for both assets but trading volume sits below its recent average, what can price data say about conviction, and what must it leave open?
BTC fell from 57,301.77 to 54,869.95 (-4.24%) and ETH from 2,425.71 to 2,297.3 (-5.29%). Both lows came at 21:00 UTC on Friday 6 September, with BTC's worst day at -3.95% and ETH's at -6.06%. Volume ran at 0.89 times BTC's and 0.76 times ETH's prior twelve-week average.
What the data shows. Both assets peaked early: BTC's high of 59,809.65 came at 02:00 UTC on Tuesday 3 September, ETH's of 2,564.83 at 20:00 UTC on Monday 2 September. Both then slid to a shared low on Friday evening, 21:00 UTC on 6 September. The week's largest hourly moves were -2.08% for BTC (in the hour starting 14:00 UTC on Friday) and -2.37% for ETH (in the hour starting 20:00 UTC on Friday). BTC's realised volatility, the size of the swings that actually happened scaled to a yearly figure, was 50.6%; ETH's was 61.8%. The two assets moved closely (hourly correlation 0.89), and the ETH/BTC ratio slipped only 1.1%, so neither asset broke away from the other. BTC closed at 32% of its weekly range, in the lower third.
What it does not show. Volume was lighter than the prior twelve-week average for both assets, at 0.89 times for BTC and 0.76 times for ETH. A lower-volume decline does not reveal whether selling was broad or thin, and the data contains no open-interest or order-book figures. It also cannot say what drove the Friday lows or whether they mark a floor.
What a careful desk would check. BTC sits 25.43% below its 52-week high, ETH 43.52% below. The prior four weeks split evenly (two up, two down), so this week extends an unsettled stretch rather than confirming a clean trend. A desk would compare its stop distances with the 2.08% and 2.37% hourly moves and ask how much of the Friday drop occurred inside a few hours.
Funding. BTC perpetual funding averaged 0.0004% per eight hours, essentially flat, ranging from -0.0076% to 0.009%. ETH's averaged 0.0034%. Neither figure signals heavy crowding on either side.
What would change this reading
- If later weeks trade below Friday's lows of 52,550.00 for BTC and 2,150.55 for ETH, this week's lows read as a waypoint rather than support.
- If volume rises well above 1.0 times the prior twelve-week average while price recovers towards the weekly opens of 57,301.77 and 2,425.71, the light-volume decline reads as a lack of demand rather than active selling.
- If the ETH/BTC ratio falls further from this week's -1.1% change, the move has become a relative one rather than a shared one.
