Weekly brief · week of 3 April 2023

Week of 3 April 2023: Ether rises 3.59% while Bitcoin adds 0.54% on thin volume

When both assets rise but one moves further than the other, and Bitcoin's trading volume sits well below normal, what does the week say about the strength of the move?

BTC gained 0.54%, closing at 28,323.76, and ETH gained 3.59%, closing at 1,858.92, with both in the same direction. BTC dollar volume was only 0.18 times its prior 12-week average. ETH outperformed BTC by 3.05 percentage points, lifting the ETH/BTC ratio 3.03%.

What the data shows. Both assets rose, but by different amounts and along different paths. BTC traded between 27,200.24 and 28,775.00, a range of 5.79%, and closed at 28,323.76 (+0.54%) in the upper third of that range. ETH's range was 10.22%, from 1,762.77 to 1,942.98, and it closed mid-range at 1,858.92 (+3.59%). Both lows came before both highs. BTC dollar volume was 8.61 billion, only 0.18 times its prior twelve-week average; ETH's 5.5 billion was 0.87 times, modestly below its own average. Hourly correlation between the two was 0.85, close but not identical, and the ETH/BTC ratio rose 3.03%, so ETH outperformed by 3.05 percentage points. BTC remains 33.66% below its 52-week high and ETH 41.98% below.

What it does not show. Thin volume tells us few dollars changed hands relative to recent weeks, not why. It cannot show whether the rise reflected broad demand or a small number of trades moving price. The weekly return ranked at the 48th percentile of BTC's 268 recorded weeks and the 59th for ETH, so neither move was unusual by historical standards. Nothing here identifies who was trading or what happened next.

What a careful desk would check. A low-volume advance is easier to reverse than one on heavy turnover. A desk would test whether the ETH outperformance persists in later weeks or fades back towards the ratio's prior level, and would watch whether BTC volume returns towards its twelve-week average. BTC's largest hourly move, -1.77%, came in the hour starting 20:00 UTC on Monday, one hour ahead of the weekly low at 21:00 UTC, so the sharpest risk arrived late on the week's first day.

Funding. Funding was close to flat: BTC averaged 0.0009% per eight hours (range -0.006% to 0.0085%) and ETH 0.0035% (range -0.0029% to 0.01%). No meaningful crowding on either side is visible in these rates.

What would change this reading

  • If BTC volume returns towards its prior twelve-week average while price holds above the week's low of 27,200.24, the thin-volume caveat weakens.
  • If the ETH/BTC ratio gives back the 3.03% gain, this week reads as a temporary divergence rather than a shift in relative strength.
  • If a later week trades below 27,200.24, the quiet advance was a pause inside a broader decline.
