Week of 28 September 2020: both assets close lower on volume below the twelve-week average

When a week produces only small price changes on thin trading volume, what does that calm actually tell a risk desk, and what does it hide?

BTC fell from 10,774.26 to 10,666.63 (-1.0%) and ETH from 357.58 to 352.37 (-1.46%). Trading volume ran at 0.71 times BTC's and 0.59 times ETH's prior twelve-week average. Both assets set their low in the same hour, 10:00 UTC on Friday 2 October.

What the data shows. The week was narrow and mildly negative. BTC traded between 10,950 (Monday's open hour) and 10,374, a 5.55% range, closing at 10,666.63 near the middle of it (close location 50.8%). ETH ranged from 370.45 to 334.24, a wider 10.83%, and also closed mid-range. The two assets shared their low hour at 10:00 UTC on Friday 2 October and their largest hourly drop in the hour starting 16:00 UTC on Thursday 1 October (-1.81% BTC, -3.05% ETH), so they moved closely (hourly correlation 0.89). The ETH/BTC ratio barely shifted (-0.46%). Realised volatility, the size of swings that actually happened, scaled to a yearly figure, was 32.1% for BTC and 52.4% for ETH. Volume was thin: 3.08 billion dollars for BTC and 1.41 billion for ETH, both below their prior twelve-week averages. BTC's weekly return ranked at the 37th percentile of the 137 weeks of history recorded before it.

What it does not show. Low volume and a mid-range close describe trading, not intent. The data cannot say whether quiet volume reflects balanced positions, low interest, or positions held firmly. Both assets remained well below their 52-week highs (BTC -14.13%, ETH -27.01%), but a quiet week does not indicate whether that gap narrows or widens next.

What a careful desk would check. Realised volatility of 32.1% for BTC and 52.4% for ETH frames what counts as an ordinary move this week, and the worst days (-1.46% BTC, -2.05% ETH) sit inside that frame. A desk would still compare its stops against the Thursday 16:00 UTC hour, when price fell 1.81% (BTC) and 3.05% (ETH) within a single hour, and ask whether thin volume would allow an exit to fill at its quoted size.

What would change this reading

  • If volume returns towards 1.0 times its twelve-week average in later weeks, this week's calm reads as a lull before activity rather than a stable regime.
  • If a later week trades below 10,374 for BTC or 334.24 for ETH, the shared Friday low becomes a broken support rather than a range boundary.
  • If the ETH/BTC ratio starts moving more than its 0.46% this week, the two assets are separating and single-asset hedges stop tracking.
