Funding reset
What does it mean when a perpetual futures funding rate changes sign during a single week?
In plain words
A funding reset is a swing in the funding rate (the regular payment between long and short futures holders) from clearly positive to clearly negative, or back, within days. It marks a change in which side is paying to stay in the trade.
Why it matters
Funding that flips sign shows the crowded side has shifted: longs who were paying to hold stopped paying, and shorts began paying instead. Traders watch resets because a carry trade that earned quietly one week can turn into a cost the next without the price moving much.
In a real week: BTC, week of 8 March 2021
In the week of 8 March 2021, BTC 8-hour funding averaged 0.0616%, ranging between a maximum of 0.1151% and a minimum of 0.01% — all recorded values positive, with no sign change inside the week. BTC still rose 15.72% and closed at 58968.31, in the upper third of its 25.51% range. The gap between the peak and the trough shows how much the payment varied.
A common mistake
Treating a funding flip as a price signal. It describes who is paying whom; it says nothing reliable about the next direction of the market.
