Market case · ETH, week of 18 August 2025

A 22.09% weekly range inside a weekly rebalance: enlarge the ETH trend, or size it to the hour risk

Should the fund raise its ETH weighting at Monday's rebalance on the strength of the breakout, or cap the increase at the size its risk model supports for a week that moved 7.54% in one hour?

The market facts are real; the decision maker is illustrative.

The week and the position

In the week of 18 August 2025, ETH rose 6.88% to 4,780.15, closing in the upper third of a 22.09% range after a low of 4,060.00 on Wednesday and a high of 4,956.78 on Sunday. The best day gained 14.36% on Friday, which also held the largest 1-hour move at 7.54%. Volume ran 1.8 times the prior 12-week average, realised volatility was 85.9% annualised, and ETH beat BTC by 10.21 percentage points. An illustrative trend fund rebalances once a week, so it can only act at Monday's close.

Judgment

The weekly signal is genuine: a close in the upper third of the range, positive after three up weeks of the prior four, and a 10.57% gain against BTC on heavy volume. Raise the ETH weighting, but size the increase from the 7.54% hour and the 22.09% range rather than from the 6.88% weekly return, and accept that a weekly rebalance cannot respond if Sunday's high gives way early in the new week. Keep the increase below whatever loss would force an out-of-cycle cut.

What would change it

If realised volatility stays near 85.9% while the ETH-BTC ratio stops rising, the enlarged weighting should be trimmed at the next rebalance. A break below 4,060.00, the week's low, invalidates the breakout basis for the increase.

What sets this case apart

The trade-off is signal strength versus hour-scale risk under a once-weekly rebalance, not whether the trend exists.
