Market case · ETH, week of 13 August 2018

A once-daily ETH conversion meets a 28.8% range and a 5.28% hour

Should the payments company keep converting each day's receipts into ETH at one fixed time, or spread each day's conversion into equal parts across the early-UTC hours where the week's low and largest hourly fall sat?

The market facts are real; the decision maker is illustrative.

The week and the position

In the week of 13 August 2018, ETH fell 5.83% from 317.96 to 299.42, a 28.80% range with annualised realised volatility of 131.7% and dollar volume of 0.72bn, 1.47 times its prior 12-week average. Monday was the worst day at -10.74%; the largest one-hour move, -5.28%, began 01:00 UTC Tuesday, and the low of 250.00 followed at 02:00 UTC Tuesday, before the high of 321.99 was set earlier Monday. Friday was the best day at +10.69%. An illustrative payments company converts customer receipts into ETH once a day. The market was 74.17% below its 52-week high.

Judgment

Keep the once-daily conversion, and split each day's receipts into equal parts at fixed hourly intervals rather than trusting one clock time. The high preceded the low this week, so no stable intraday pattern favours one hour; a single fix could have transacted near 321.99 or near 250.00, and the data gives no basis for preferring one hour. Postponing is worse: with a 10.69% best day inside the same week, waiting converts at prices that cannot be predicted. Accept the spread between any day's fix and that day's best price as the cost of running the flow.

What would change it

If the company's own ledger shows a repeatable early-UTC discount over several weeks, concentrating part of the conversion in 00:00-07:59 UTC becomes justified. If hourly moves shrink well below the -5.28% scale and the 28.80% range narrows for several weeks, the split cadence can collapse back to one fix.

What sets this case apart

This is a scheduled treasury flow, not a position: the decision is how to distribute unavoidable buying across a day, not whether the asset will rise.
