Market case · BTC, week of 9 May 2022

A fifth straight down week, a 28.25% range, and one 4.13% rebound day at rebalance

Should a weekly-rebalancing trend fund keep or increase its short BTC position into next week, or trim it because the close sat at 61.4% of the week's range after a 26,700 low?

The market facts are real; the decision maker is illustrative.

The week and the position

In the week of 9 May 2022, BTC fell 7.96%, its fifth consecutive down week after four prior weeks of -5.88%, -0.57%, -2.49% and -11.52%, and it closed 54.35% below its 52-week high. The range was 28.25%, from a 34,243.15 high on Monday 01:00 UTC to a 26,700 low on Thursday 05:00 UTC, with a -6.99% hour on Wednesday 12:00 UTC and an 11.64% loss on Monday. Sunday gained 4.13%, the week's best day, lifting the close to 61.4% of the range. Volume ran 2.18 times the prior 12-week average, and realised volatility reached 140.2% annualised. An illustrative trend fund rebalances once a week and is deciding its position size.

Judgment

A weekly trend signal does not turn on one rebound day. Keep the short exposure and set its size from the annualised volatility of 140.2%, not the calm average, so a repeat of Wednesday's -6.99% hour or Monday's -11.64% day fits inside the loss limit. The Sunday gain and the 61.4% close location justify not adding to the position at this rebalance, and they are not a reason to close it. Accept that the fund will give back part of the move off 26,700 before the trend confirms or fails.

What would change it

If the next weekly close rises back above this week's open of 34,038.39, or a sixth consecutive week fails to close lower, the downtrend signal is spent and the short should be cut. A positive 8-hour funding print above 0.01% alongside a higher close would count the same way.

What sets this case apart

The tension is between a five-week trend signal and a close at 61.4% of range, resolved by sizing to volatility rather than by reading the rebound as a turn.
